Description

Opened in August of 2020, Kahlert Village is a residential community on campus, home to approximately over 1,000 first-year students. The building is made up of seven themed communities to help students deepen their engagement on campus. The building features single, single with private bathroom, single suite, single cluster, double and triple rooms in cluster-style and suite-style configurations. Kahlert Village is centrally located on campus, includes a full-service dining facility, and a variety of classroom and study space available for students. A meal plan is required in this living area.

Living Learning Communities (LLCs)

LLCs often help residents complete their general education requirements and make progress on their honors degree or choice of major by engaging community members in a required course.

Kahlert Village Community Empowerment Scholars

If you are a first-year student looking to create a community with fellow peers of all backgrounds, Community Empowerment Scholars Living Learning Community is for you. Residents will enroll in ETHNC 2510 (Fall) and ETHNIC 2520 (Spring) while receiving academic and social support. You will receive exposure to Advisors, Faculty as well as Peer Mentors who will help you on your journey. Come spend your first year with like-minded students exploring identity, engaging in social justice discussions, and serving the community. All these elements come together to holistically develop students and help them find their sense of belonging here at the University of Utah.

Who Selects Residents: The Center For Student Access and Resources will create a committee to select residents based on response in Community Empowerment Scholars application.

Kahlert Village High Impact Volunteer Engagement Community

Within the Gail Miller Community Engagement Tower, the Bennion Center’s Living Learning Community, High Impact Volunteer Engagement (H.I.V.E) will allow students who are interested in community engagement to further explore opportunities through curricular and co-curricular high-impact volunteer engagement experiences.

Students who opt into this community will develop their civic skills, habits, actions, and values in partnership with the Bennion Center for Community Engagement and local community organizations.

Who Selects Residents: The Bennion Center
Associated Courses: BENN 1020: Pathways to Community Engagement (Optional) One additional Community Engagement Learning course of choice (Fall or Spring) Additional Requirements:
  • Participate in the Bennion Center's Saturday Service Projects, for example Legacy of Lowell(September), Environmental and Sustainability (April) and MLK Jr Day of Service (January)
  • Participate in 1 service corner project(Fall)
  • Engage in 1 additional Bennion Center community engagement program (Fall or Spring)
    • Alternative Breaks, Community Partner Programs, Utah Reads (work-study eligible students only)
  • Participate in at least 1 Bennion Center forum, workshop, or dialogue per semester. This may include Community Conversations, Service House Dialogues, or educational presentations organized by the Bennion Center
  • Attend at least 1 Bennion Scholarspresentation (March of Spring semester)
  • Participate in a mid-year check-in with Bennion Center staff advisor (November or January)
Students selected to live in the H.I.V.E. will also be on track toward a Certificate in Community Engagement and designation as a Bennion Scholar.

Honors First Year Community

Honors College Living Learning Communities (LLCs)

LLCs are designed to bring smaller groups of students together within a residence hall. These groups create a small network of Honors students who take one or more required Honors course during their first year of college. The groups will also participate in out of class co-curricular activities. Honors students are permitted to live in any location that they are eligible for, including traditional housing.

Who Selects Residents: The Honors College selects Honors students at random when students indicate a preference for Honors Housing through their Housing U application.

Kahlert Village Heather Kahlert STEM Tower

In today’s world—digital literacy is of upmost importance. The Heather Kahlert STEM Tower seeks to bring students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math [STEM] disciplines together under one roof to live and learn together. This community seeks to create opportunities for access for students who are traditionally marginalized in the STEM fields, including women and students of color. Whether you’re planning on pursuing a STEM major or have an interest in weaving technology into your future career goals, the Heather Kahlert STEM Tower is a great way for you to form community and deepen your engagement.

Kahlert Village Patricia W. Child Health & Wellness Tower

The Patricia W. Child Health & Wellness Tower was created to develop students who will transform the future of health care in the United States. This community seeks to approach health and wellness holistically by uniting students with interests in all areas of the health care profession such as future nurses, social workers, physicians, administrators, and more. This community will work closely with the University of Utah Interprofessional Education program which brings students together to develop health competencies and work together to brainstorm solutions for complex problems. Diverse representation is critically important in the health profession, and this community is created with the intent of supporting access for historically marginalized groups. If you have an interest in health, care practices, and the way they intersect in the community—the Patricia W. Child Health & Wellness Tower is for you.

Kahlert Village Gail Miller Community Engagement Tower

Do you care about the world around you? Are you interested in making an impact in your community and learning with like-minded peers? Residents of the Gail Miller Community Engagement Tower will work in collaboration with the Esteemed Bennion Center, fellow students, and local partners to strengthen communities through learning, scholarship, and advocacy. Residents will have the opportunity to connect their academic knowledge with real-world applications and develop their own civic competencies through community engagement. Residents will explore community engagement opportunities and pathways, develop awareness about justice and equity, and build connections with other students to foster a sense of belonging at the University of Utah.

College of Science First Year Community

First-year science and mathematics majors are invited to apply to the College of Science First Year Community. Residents will find support and connections among their peers and additional opportunities to engage with the College. Residents enjoy a variety of events, including planting seeds in pots, pizza and movie night, slime making and snow cones, paint night, and cookie decorating. Selected students attend a faculty dinner.

Who Selects Residents: Selection for the College of Science First Year Community is completed by the College of Science. Priority is given to students that intend to declare a major in the College (Atmospheric Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Geology & Geophysics, Mathematics, Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Physics & Astronomy).

College of Engineering First Year Floor

If you’re a first-year student who is hoping to pursue a degree in Engineering, the College of Engineering First Year Floor is an excellent Theme Community option for you. Residents in the Engineering Floor work together to support each other through the rigors of their courses while deepening their connection to the College of Engineering faculty, staff, and opportunities. The Resident Advisors in this community are engineering students who can help mentor you through your academic career.

Associated Courses: Residents in this community take courses towards completion of an engineering degree and select those courses during New Student Orientation.

Kahlert Village Outdoor Leadership Floor

If you’re a first-year or sophomore student who is excited about all of the outdoor opportunities available in Utah, the Outdoor Leadership Floor is an excellent Theme Community option for you. Residents in the Outdoor Leadership Floor work together with Outdoor Adventures to plan adventures throughout Utah and the Rocky Mountains. If you live on this floor, you will have the opportunity to go whitewater rafting, rock climbing, snowshoeing, camping, backpacking, hiking, back country skiing, and do many other activities in this beautiful place. If you’re an outdoors person or you want to be an outdoors person, come join the students of the Outdoor Leadership Floor.
