As a person with a bit of social anxiety, I understand how hard it is to make friends on campus. Even so, there are some tips and tricks I’ve learned that have helped me to make friends, despite that doubtful, anxious voice in your head. It’s important to have a strong support system in college to help you through hard times, and friends are a great way to have that support.
Sit With Someone At The Dining Hall
If you see someone sitting alone in the dining hall, it’s okay to ask to sit with them! Some of my close friends were made in the dining hall, so don’t be afraid to speak up! If they say no, no worries. Don’t take it personally! There are always other people nearby who are in the same boat as you!
Get Involved At The Student Life Center
Classes at the Student Life Center can help you to get involved with a like-minded community. From cycling classes to yoga classes, there are lots of options for getting involved at the Student Life Center. Not only that, but a simple conversation can spark a friendship for life. In addition to that, the climbing gym is a great way to get involved and meet people.
Find Friends on Social Media
You know those Facebook or Instagram groups you were added to that are for your class? Well, that’s a great way to make friends! Reach out to someone online through those groups and meet somewhere on campus to study or grab a coffee. Social media is a great tool in making new friends.
Join a Club
Clubs are a great way to get involved and meet people on campus. Start by finding a club you’re interested in, go to a club meeting, and connect with people who have similar interests. This will help you meet new people and create those lasting friendships while also doing fun activities and enjoying your unique interests. Go to the Campus Life website to find clubs and centers to be involved in!
Meet People Through Classes
Another great place to find friends who have common interests is the classroom. Taking courses that you love entails that others will probably have that same interest. A friend can be made with a simple conversation with the person next to you.
Overall, friends can be made anywhere on campus. Whatever way you choose to make friends, don’t be afraid to start building your community! This will allow you to have a positive college experience surrounded by friends that love and support you through hard times.
